You are invited to share ideas on improving city riverside

Stadium for Bath – the project that brings together Bath Rugby, Bath Rugby Foundation and Arena 1865 with the joint ambition of creating a new sport and community-focused destination in the heart of the city – is calling on you to have your say.

Redevelopment of Bath Rugby’s current stadium is the catalyst for the project, which offers a unique and timely opportunity to regenerate the riverside in the heart of the city, adjacent to the Rec.

This important part of the city centre, which has been long overlooked has the potential to become a vibrant new leisure destination for residents and visitors of Bath, with the added opportunity for improving access to the area from the city centre.

Bath Rugby’s current stadium at the Rec has for years faced away from the city centre leaving little scope for public realm development. With the commencement of the Stadium for Bath project – which could see a new rugby stadium and community facilities created on the Rec – new life could also be breathed into the neglected river frontage.

The opportunity comes at a time when Bath is seeing investment in its riverside areas, creating new business hubs, new homes and new public spaces adjacent to one of the city’s greatest assets – the River Avon. The Bath Quays and Bath Riverside developments are two such projects that when complete will breathe new life into once forgotten parts of the city.

Tarquin McDonald, Chief Executive of Bath Rugby, believes that there is an opportunity to create an exceptional new riverside as part of the Stadium for Bath project and is inviting the people of Bath to have their say.

“Over the past 12-months we’ve been consulting extensively with neighbours and many people across Bath and the resounding feedback has been a sense of optimism and excitement about the opportunity for creating something exceptional in the heart of this unique city.

“Over the coming months, we will be accelerating the design process not only for the new stadium but for the riverside too.  We want people to share with us their aspirations for the area which is such an important part of the city, with the opportunity be a jewel in the city’s crown. We would love to see ideas and examples from around the world of truly great riverside regeneration to help us create a place that can be enjoyed by everyone for many years to come.”

Grimshaw has also provided a selection of potential river activities and a wider selection of riverside development projects to open the debate up even further.

Tarquin McDonald concluded; “It might sound surprising, but we want these examples, provided by Grimshaw, to divide opinion. We want them to have the ‘Marmite effect’ because this way we will know what the people of Bath definitely do, and more importantly, definitely don’t, want to see in the designs Grimshaw bring forward.  There is a unique opportunity to transform a core part of our city into something truly amazing and I firmly believe that we will get this right if we all work together.

Bath Rugby Foundation XV – Jade Whale

Bath Rugby Foundation Hitz student, Jade Whale, has been selected to appear on Bath Rugby’s shirt when the team runs out at the Clash.

The Foundation will be taking centre stage when Bath Rugby take on age-old rivals Leicester Tigers at Twickenham on April 7, with the match shirt featuring the Bath Rugby Foundation XV.

All fifteen have been selected for their achievements while taking part in a range of the Foundation’s programmes.

In a short period of time 16-year-old Jade Whale has become an inspirational leader on the Hitz programme.

Previously a student at John of Gaunt School at GCSE she didn’t get her results in English that she wanted. She’d found it difficult over the year and avoided some lessons.

She met Foundation coaches on GCSE results day and enrolled with Hitz. She’s currently doing very well and has become a leader for the group and a very positive influence on the other students.  She’s also progressing in English and on track to get her grades.

Paul Short said picking Jade to be part of the Bath Rugby Foundation XV was a “no brainer”.

He said: “Jade is a phenomenal character that just epitomises what we are trying to achieve not only in Hitz, but as a Foundation as a whole.

“She is a natural leader in the classroom; she inspires other people to work hard

In just a short period of time she’s grown in confidence. Just in that time with us she’s developed fitness programmes and I think her next step now will be going back into coaching. She’s been coaching at after school clubs and coaching in the community.

“She is just committed to everything she does – everything she tries her hand at – and that dedication I think is going to allow her to go very far.”

HITZ is Premiership Rugby’s award-winning education and employability programme which works with over 2,000 14 to 18-year-olds across England every year. HITZ uses rugby to engage young people who are NEET (not in education, employment or training) to give them the skills and qualifications they need to get back on their feet.

Having previously considered a career in the armed forces and the police, Jade said the Hitz programme has helped her form plans for her future.

She said: “It has grown my confidence. It has opened my mind up about what I want to do in the future. It has given me the opportunity to do different things.”

In her spare time Jade plays football for Westbury Youth & Trowbridge Town Ladies Football Club.  She also takes photographs of buildings around town and loves running.

HITZ uses rugby’s core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship to get young people not in education, training or employment (NEET) back into education, training, apprenticeships and/or employment, and is delivered nationally by England’s 12 professional rugby clubs.

Using the ethos of rugby as a vehicle, HITZ develops grit, tenacity and perseverance – vital in the world of work. Our specialist coaches capitalise on rugby’s ability to remove barriers, build trust and increase confidence to set students on the path to success. HITZ also responds to the crisis of physical inactivity amongst disadvantaged and vulnerable young people. 90% of students completing the course improve their numeracy, literacy and IT skills. At least 75% take on further education, employment, training, work placements or apprenticeships. The programme also gives students a qualification – a level 1 diploma in Sport and Active Leisure.

Bath Rugby Foundation XV to feature on Bath Rugby shirt for The Clash

When Bath Rugby run out at Twickenham Stadium for The Clash in April they will be taking fifteen inspiring individuals onto the field with them in a unique way.

For the first time, this year’s limited-edition charity shirt will feature the Foundation’s own, very special XV – individuals whose determination to overcome the odds has seen them achieve remarkable success.

Over the coming weeks, we will profile each of the incredible beneficiaries who have been selected to appear on the shirt, which has been designed by Canterbury of New Zealand, Official Kit Supplier to the Club, and will raise funds for Cheap Tramadol Mastercard after the game.

Matt Garvey, Club captain at Bath, said: “As players, we’re really honoured to be representing these fifteen amazing individuals at The Clash. The whole community is incredibly important to us, and we know that when we take to the field, we don’t just do so for ourselves, but on behalf of everyone supporting the Club.

“The Foundation work with some very inspirational young people, so it’s great to recognise them in this way, and to also help them continue the great work they do in the wider community in Bath.”

One of the special Foundation XV is the charity’s Inclusion Coach Becks Toan.

“The foundation means everything to me,” she said. “I don’t like to think about where I would be without it.”

Becks, who lives in Frome, had been trying – and struggling – to find a route into a sporting career, with long-held ambition of being a coach.

She was unemployed and “at rock bottom”.

While Becks is focused on helping others as a coach, she knows the impact that Bath Rugby Foundation has had on her own life.

“I was like a broken down car when I met the foundation,” she said. “The foundation fixed me.

“It means the world to me that someone believed in me.”

The Clash sees the Club take on arch-rivals Leicester Tigers at the home of English rugby on Saturday 7th April. A fantastic day out is on offer, with free family entertainment before and after the game itself. Over 30,000 tickets have already been sold for The Clash, with prices starting at just £5 for children and £15 for adults. Tickets can be bought at Tramadol Using Mastercard.

Bath Rugby Foundation is the charitable arm of Bath Rugby. The mission of Bath Rugby Community Foundation is to empower vulnerable children and young people in Bath and surrounding areas to succeed through programmes which focus on four areas: health, education, employability and inclusion.

Bath Rugby Foundation CEO Lynne Fernquest said: “20 per cent of children in Bath are living in poverty. We don’t believe this is right – and we want to help young people break down the barriers they are facing, to have the confidence and the tools to overcome adversity.

“We use the values of rugby to increase confidence and allow vulnerable young people to overcome barriers and create a better future.

“Our aim is to intervene early, so we can make the biggest impact. We believe it makes sense on every level to create strong children now rather than fix broken adults later.”
